Settings - Cash Rounding

Cash Rounding automatically rounds the cash amount due to the nearest $0.05 — so your staff never have to hand over one- and two-cent coins. It's standard practice in markets that have retired the penny (like Canada, where the 1¢ coin was discontinued in 2013).

Only cash is affected. Credit, debit, and gift-card payments are always charged the exact amount, down to the cent.

How to Enable the Feature

Navigate to Store Portal > Settings > Payment Settings, and find Cash Rounding.

How the Rounding Rule Works

The system uses a fixed $0.05 symmetric rounding rule. It looks at the last digit of the total and rounds to the nearest nickel. This rule is built in and can't be customized.

If the total ends in…

It rounds to…

Example

$0.01 or $0.02

down to the nearest $0.05

$10.02 → $10.00

$0.03 or $0.04

up to the nearest $0.05

$10.03 → $10.05

$0.05

no change

$10.05 → $10.05

$0.06 or $0.07

down to the nearest $0.05

$10.07 → $10.05

$0.08 or $0.09

up to the nearest $0.05

$10.08 → $10.10

In short: $0.01–$0.02 and $0.06–$0.07 round down; $0.03–$0.04 and $0.08–$0.09 round up.

Split payments

When an order is paid partly in cash and partly another way:

  • Each cash portion is rounded on its own to the nearest $0.05; non-cash portions (card, gift card, etc.) are charged exactly.

  • If the final payment is cash, its rounding difference is recorded as the order's Cash Rounding and shown on the receipt. If the final payment is non-cash, the order has no Cash Rounding.

Refunds after Cash Rounding

If Cash Rounding was on when the order was created, refunds can only use Amount Refund. Item-level refunds are not supported while Cash Rounding is on.

Impact on Reports

When Cash Rounding is on, every rounding adjustment is tracked so your cash and sales totals still reconcile. You'll see it recorded as its own line, separate from your regular sales and refunds, so nothing goes missing.

The two line items

  • Cash Rounding — the adjustment applied when a cash sale is rounded to the nearest $0.05.

  • Cash Rounding Refund — the adjustment applied when a cash refund is rounded.

Reports affected includes:

  • Cash Report

  • Z Report (end-of-day / closed-out day)

  • Cash Drawer History

  • Transaction Detail

Cash Rounding is recorded by its impact on your revenue — did you end up taking in a little more, or a little less? Therefore, you might see negative number on your report, if cash rounding did not work in your favor.

Quick example: a guest owes $10.06 and pays cash. Rounded up to $10.05, they hand over $10.05. → Your reports show Cash Rounding -$0.01 — you collected one cents less than the exact total.
